a collaboration between aphex twin (richard d. james) and µÐziq (mike paradinas), mike & rich - Õexpert knob twiddlersÕ was made back in 1994. richard edited the tracks into shape later in 1996 with his new apple mac computer and it was released later that year on rephlex, the label he co-owned and which released the first two albums by µ-ziq. this new reissued version has been carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original dat tapes, put into a more fitting order and, more excitingly, seven new bonus tracks and alternative versions have also been added. the album was recorded over a few days during the 1994 world cup, back when richard lived in a big shared flat in stoke newington. richard had tried to collaborate with a few other likeminded artists but something clicked when mike and rich worked together and the sessions have a unique feel, playful and at times actually drunk. these are fun experiments in the spirit of lighthearted moog pop and ripe 70s british tv themes, standing out from the po-faced electronica of the time with a garish glee. the record was made on what is now seen as pretty primitive gear - an atari, roland mks-80, memorymoog, roland r8 and a handful of samples on a casio fz-10m - but itÕs to their credit that it resonates well with the hardware workouts coming out today. there s a broadminded but sloppy funk to the record, even whistling, singing and harpsichord in reg and wonky beat pile-ons in jelly fish . there s latin piano and wheezy drunken techno in ÔvodkaÕ, or the sleepy spaced out ambience of Ôbu bu bu ba with its barely contained laughter which seems to reflect the absurdity. the new versions and bonus tracks are an absolute delight - from a trancier version of Ôvodka to the wonky bounce of Ôportamento gosh , the 3/4 dub of waltz, the banging door bass of brivert and muonds , the creepy seasick atmosphere of clissold bathroom and finishing with the strangely graceful and serious organ plodder . a generous and welcome return to the racks

the last 12 months have been a boon for fans of luke vibert, with the veteran cornishman delivering a killer acid album for hypercolour, and a slick, melodious set of disco-inspired jams under his kerrier district alias. here he returns to regular home planet mu with another typically entertaining set inspired by classic british electronic music. utilising his battery of vintage music-making machines, vibert giddily doffs a cap to early 90s intelligent techno, rave-era hardcore, bleep, chicago acid and braindance, occasionally veering off track via easy listening inspired future jazz, wagon christ style hip-hop head-nodders (the title track, which doffs a cap to a forgotten, mid-90s remix he did for ninja tune) and squidgy, synth-propelled mutant electrofunk.

with *my love is a bulldozer*, venetian snares first new album since 2010s *my so-called life*, aaron funk surprises yet again, drawing on new ideas and on moods that have only been touched upon in his previous work. the album seems to have a flowing sense of narrative, something akin to an opera, and unusually aaron sings songs on it, which reinforces the sense of an emotional journey. sonically he meshes together sometimes thunderous yet complex drum programming with delicate musical structures, creating, in places, a sense of haunted, atmospheric jazziness, as well as spiky autumnal strings recalling the gothic orchestral beauty of his previous work.

after last years album love & devotion the husband and wife duo of mike paradinas and lara rix-martin follow up with weird drift. the album shows just how much their ability to write confident and thoughtful pop songs has developed, while still being able to retain the sleepy cushion of steamy synth pop that made the first record so rewarding to listen to. this time album features the vocals of a vezelay, a.k.a. french singer and producer matthieu le berre, who brings a gentle poised falsetto to the duos productions along with a delicate but hopeful angst.

rome s egisto sopor has been making waves with his releases for quite a while now: he put out a cdr album on legowelt s strange life records and a cassette on the much admired 100% silk label, both under the name polysick. as theawayteam he released the dvd relax & sleep and cd star kinship on japanese label maomoo. he is also one half of the low-key video unit aavv, whose work has graced many of the important releases of the new lo-fi electronic movement. digital native is his first album properÑfifteen tracks of glowing, nocturnal, analog grace that recall the days of acid house and early techno, but with a mood and intent designed for watching images dance on closed eyelids. it s no surprise that his work as a video artist resonates so strongly with the music he makes. polysick has tapped straight into the synthetic pleasures of early dance musics otherworldly pulses: the hypnotic arpeggios of italo disco, soaring detroit chords, cosmic disco, the -fourth world music- of jon hassell and the library exotics of piero umiliani. this is body music for the resting body. imagine the nexus of early acid house and italo music used for mental therapy, exotic traveling and imaginingÑexciting the brain waves and journeying into imagined spaces.

2011 release, the follow up to 2010s successful first volume of bangs & works. the carefully curated compilation showcases chicago footwork, one of the most forward-looking, innovative new styles of electronic music on the planet. footwork is beginning to spread outside of chicago, influencing productions around the world. bangs & works vol. 2 brings the focus back onto chicagos own producers, showing where the real innovation still lies. while its predecessor sticks mainly to the more hallucinatory and left-field elements, this one has a wider remit, ranging from mad techno-style tracks to those that sound like musique concrete gone footwork.

dj diamond is 24 year old karlis griffin from the west side of chicago. he has been producing music since the age of 13 and djing since 20, heading the -flight muzik- clique of footwork producers. you might recall his two tracks from our -bangs & works vol.1- footwork compilation of last year. in addition hes also released several mix cds in chicago, but this, his first international album showcases his unique style of footwork music. dj diamond is a unique producer with his own distinct style and an unusual ear for unexpected sonic and rhythmic combinations within the footwork template. often he thoroughly edits samples into tiny trance-inducing, techno-like stabs. combining this with a penchant for neon synths and loose, broken drums (that are often more effect-laden and freeform than those of of his peers) and you have a sound which has an intriguing, deeper, dreamlike feel. the breadth and quality of his production is clear when you listen to this album. take opener -rep yo clique-s woozy drawling synths and tribal tom patterns next to -speakerz n tonguez- with it-s snapping snares, minimal, repetitive voice samples and martial, detailed drum work. then a track like -torture rack- which is like grime in outer space: a minimal bassline and some samples from a computer game, while a bass kick stumbles at half time, swarms of percussive detail giving it drama. its a brilliant exercise in wonky tension. the extraordinary -decoded- comes across like a kind of amalgam of trance and prog rock bombast at 160bpm while -wreckageÕs- high pitch saw noise is like a strange metallic bird-call, over light cymbals, gabba-like kicks and metallic claps. -digimons- harmonic microedits could even be an snd track transported to chicago. finally the albums closer -i choose you- rolls out over a heavily edited and processed soul sample, its drums rolling off at odd angles to almost seasick effect.

travis stewart is a producer whos always been admired by the electronic cognosenti, both as a solo producer in his project machinedrum and also as one half of sepalcure on hotflush recordings. after a break from producing he started to resurface in a major way last year with the -many faces e.p.- on glasgows luckyme label. however, for -room(s)-, his latest album on planet mu, he s well ahead of the curve, approaching the album in a way he s never worked before.the tracks on room(s) were started on the spur of the moment, often whilst traveling and finished in the studio, with the notion in mind that great moments of inspiration are fleeting so its best to grab on to that moment when it happens and squeeze it for all its worth. travis says of this process, -i feel like the energy of a song is lost the longer you spend working on it. this experiment in becoming less attached to my work essentially lead to a lot of songs that are connected sonically and aesthetically.-
